If there’s one question I get asked more than “what should I eat?” it’s “how often should I be eating?” and once again, it’s very straightforward.⠀Whatever works for you.⁣⠀⠀

It’s very easy to understand the confusion. We have people telling us to only eat 1-2 meals a day and fast the rest of the day, others telling us to eat 6-8 meals spaced throughout the day, even some saying to go a day week without eating at all. So what gives?⠀⁣⠀⠀

Well lets break it down. When you eat food your body burns calories digesting the food. So the idea behind eating small meals regularly is that the more often you eat the more often you “boost metabolism” and burn more throughout the day. But the amount of calories burned depends on the overall quantity of food consumed, not the frequency. For example, if it takes 10 calories of energy to digest 500 calories of food, it won’t matter if those 500 come from 1 meal or 2, the energy used is the same.⠀⁣⠀⠀

So, how often should you eat? However often works for you. For fat loss, the frequency of your meals doesn’t matter, the amount of calories you consume is what will impact your progress. ⁣⠀⠀

Unless you are an elite athlete or competitor, or have a specific medical concern, meal timing isn’t a big factor. So eat when suits you. It’s a minor detail. Focus on the bigger picture – total calories and the variety of your foods.⠀⁣⠀⠀

You may find you can stay within your calories more consistently or enjoy eating smaller meals more often, likewise you may prefer eating larger meals less frequently – whatever works for you and your schedule is the best approach.⁣⠀⠀
