Sedentary lifestyle is leading to common digestive problems such as acidity. We do tend to take health issues like burning sensation in the chest, stomach lightly, but if it is occurring frequently, one needs to visit a doctor as there is a high chance of one suffering from severe health condition like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Skipping meals, irregular meals, no physical activity, having spicy and oily food items on a regular basis are the major reasons for burning sensation in the chest area. Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, stress also lead to heartburn.
Heartburn is a common health condition created by acid reflux. Heartburn occurs when the acid goes back into your oesophagus (the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach). Acid reflux is a result of the weakening of the muscle connecting the oesophagus and the stomach.
When you consume something, the muscle around the endpoint of your oesophagus, also called the lower oesophagal sphincter, relaxes to ensure that the food items reach your stomach. However, if the oesophageal sphincter weakens, the acid in the stomach can flow back and cause heartburn.
