Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Nigerian men
Prostate cancer screening is not a common practice in Nigeria in spite of prostate cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Nigerian men Awareness about prostate cancer is also poor, Majority of our patients therefore usually present in themselves with the disease in the advanced stage
Prostate cancer is common in men over 50 years of age, with the risk of developing prostate cancer increasing with aging. Certain populations are at increased risk for developing prostate cancer, particularly African and men with a first-degree relative, father or brother, diagnosed with prostate cancer at a younger age.

In a study conducted in 13LG in Lagos state by Stephen odunayo ikuerowo et al.

The estimated prevalence of prostate cancer was at least 1046 per 100,000 men of age 40 years and above. This value is much greater than that previously reported in a study in Lagos
This study has demonstrated that there is a high prevalence of prostate cancer in the community in Lagos, much higher than the previously known. The majority of the men already have advanced and high grade disease and have not even sought for treatment.
