PMS and menstrual cramps are something that every woman has to deal with once in a month. The intense pain, mood swings, digestive problems can become too unbearing for some. Almost 90 per cent of menstruating women deal with these symptoms before and during their monthly cycle. For some, the condition gets so intense that they have to rely on over-the-counter medicines and different kinds of home remedies for relief. To help you cope with period related problems, celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently took to her Instagram handle and shared some important tips that can help ease the problem during the periods. Here are 5 foods that one needs to take during their periods for relief.
Soaked raisins and Kesar (saffron), when taken together, not only help soothe period pain, but can also help your deal with PMS mood swings. Having 4-5 overnight soaked raisins with some Kesar, the first thing in the morning has proven to be quite effective on menstrual pain. One can also start taking them a week before their period if they know their dates. Raisins act as a natural laxative and help to keep your digestion process in check, while studies suggest that Kesar may affect serotonin activity, which is good for PMS as well as depression.
During your monthly cycle, Rujuta suggests to include bananas in your diet. She said all forms of banana- fruit, flour, flower bhaaji, are effective in reducing period symptoms. You can have the savoury dishes with your meal and fruit as a snack between the meal. Bananas contain vitamin B6 and potassium, which can help relieve the problem of bloating and cramps.
As per Rujuta, eating root and tuber vegetables like sweet potato, arbi, radish, beetroot twice a week also help during the periods. These vegetables are rich in fiber and polyphenol and can help you manage your period pain easily. Not only this, but they also keep your skin supple and smooth.
Having whole-grain food items like millet, buckwheat and amaranth also help to alleviate unpleasant period symptoms. Buckwheat is especially good for easing menstrual pain issues in winters. These food grains decrease inflammation in the body and help manage menstrual cramps.
Aliv or garden cress seeds contain a high amount of folic acids and iron. Rujuta advises mixing them with coconut and jaggery to make laddoos or adding a pinch of the seeds into turmeric milk at night for relief. These seeds keep your haemoglobin level in check.
Besides, having a teaspoon of ghee with each meal during periods can help to improve overall health. Ghee is rich in butyric acid which helps to maintain a healthy gut and is also beneficial for the skin. Ghee provides relief from digestive issues faced by many women during those 5 days of the month.
